STAFF REPORT

The Texas State volleyball team could be on the golden path to the NCAA Tournament as they advance through the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Bobcats have advanced to Saturday’s championship against the last team into the league tournament.

The Bobcats finally got one up on Arkansas State, winning a three-set semifinal by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-20. Arkansas State had defeated the Bobcats in the final match of the regular season, keeping Texas State from the No. 2 seed.

But Arkansas State, the No. 7 seed, beat second-seeded Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) in the first round to set up the semifinal match with Texas State, which opened with a four-set win against Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL).

The Bobcats will face eighth-seeded Troy in the championship match Saturday (1 p.m.) at Troy. The Trojans pulled the upset of the tournament, beating league kingpin Western Kentucky in a three-set match in the first round. Troy beat fourth-seeded Texas-Arlington (UTA) in the semifinals to reach Saturday’s championship match against Texas State.

Texas State now is 23-12 overall.

Texas State’s Caylin Mahoney kept the Arkansas State defense off balance all match with 34 assists, eight digs along, four block assists and five kills. Ashlee Hilbun led the Bobcats with five block assists, while Molly Ahrens added four.
