STAFF REPORT

The Texas State men’s basketball team has lined up against respectable competition, so the results have been respectable. But they’re still 0-4, and their 70-49 loss at Southern Methodist Thursday night was a dull pain, a groaning 20-point deficit for the entire second half.

SMU won the game in the first half, taking a 41-20 lead as it shot 56 percent (14 of 25) before halftime. Meanwhile, the Bobcats shot the ball poorly in the first half, making only six of 24 field goal attempts (25 percent) and they moved the ball poorly, making 12 turnovers against only three assists.

The second half was more even, 29-29, though the Bobcats shot barely better at 38.5 percent (10 of 26). The Bobcats couldn’t make headway, partly because SMU controlled its defensive board by a 17-2 margin in the second half.

Joel Wright led the Bobcats with 21 points on seven-for-12 shooting, but he had no assists and six turnovers. No one else on the Bobcats scored more than six points. Nic Moore led SMU with 12 points, followed by 14 points for Nick Russell.

The Bobcats will try it again 7 p.m. Monday at Strahan Coliseum against South Dakota, which is 0-3.
