Several Bobcats named in preseason football magazines

The Fourth of July is fast approaching, which can only mean that college football magazine season is upon us.
If the magazines that have so far made announcements are to be believed, the Bobcats stand to have a strong kicking game. Athlon and Phil Steele both picked Jafus Gaines as a Sun Belt Conference first team kick returner and Andy Erickson as the league’s first team punt returner. Phil Steele also named kicker Will Johnson and punter Zack Robinson to the Sun Belt second team. Steele ranked the Texas State kicking game as the seventh best in the country.
Athlon placed five Texas State players on its preseason All-Sun Belt team while naming D.J. Yendrey as one of the top transfers in the country. The magazine placed linebacker Michael Orakpo and cornerback Xavier Daniels on the first team defense. Yendrey, who comes to Texas State from Texas Christian, was one of 30 players listed by Athlon as a player likely to make an immediate impact at his new school. The defensive lineman was placed on the magazine’s Sun Belt second team.
Athlon also ranked Texas State’s recruiting class as the second best in the Sun Belt, naming running back Jamel James and cornerback Dila Rosemond as top ten signees within the league.
Steele named Yendrey as a first-team defensive lineman and Orakpo as a first-team linebacker. Steele named Craig Mager, who had four interceptions last season, as a first team defensive back.
Steele named six Texas State players to its third team for the Sun Belt: Daniels, junior college transfer running back C.J. Best, receiver Isaiah Battle, offensive lineman Charlie Will Tuttle, defensive lineman Blake McColloch and linebacker David Mayo.
